Alfa D Drop (10ml) is a sterile oral solution of alfacalcidol, a potent analog of vitamin D3 that undergoes rapid conversion in the liver to active calcitriol. It works by actively regulating calcium and phosphate metabolism, thereby enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium and promoting proper bone mineralization. This therapeutic solution is widely prescribed in Pakistan to manage bone diseases associated with chronic renal failure, rickets, and hyperparathyroidism.

Purpose

To manage calcium deficiency, renal osteodystrophy, rickets, and secondary hyperparathyroidism by stimulating intestinal calcium absorption.

Warnings

Periodically monitor serum calcium and phosphate levels to prevent the development of drug-induced hypercalcemia and ectopic tissue calcification. Discontinue the treatment immediately if hypercalcemia occurs until serum calcium values return to a stable physiological reference range. Use with pronounced caution in patients taking digitalis preparations as hypercalcemia can precipitate severe cardiac arrhythmias. Avoid the simultaneous use of magnesium-containing antacids or preparations to prevent the clinical development of hypermagnesemia.

Side Effects

Hypercalcemia presenting with symptoms such as malaise, dry mouth, constipation, and generalized fatigue. Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or mild gastrointestinal irritation following oral administration. Skin hypersensitivity reactions including pruritus, generalized rash, or localized urticaria. Hypercalciuria or increased risk of nephrolithiasis and progressive renal function impairment.
