Gempaz is a highly selective inhibitor of the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) protein located in the proximal renal tubules. By inhibiting SGLT2, the drug reduces the reabsorption of filtered glucose and lowers the renal threshold for glucose, thereby promoting the excretion of excess blood sugar through urine (glucosuria). This mechanism not only provides robust glycemic control but also results in secondary weight loss and reduction in systolic blood pressure, contributing to a decreased risk of cardiovascular morbidity in diabetic patients.

Purpose

Indicated for the improvement of glycemic control in adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise.

Warnings

Increases the risk of genital mycotic infections and urinary tract infections; maintain adequate hydration to prevent volume depletion and hypotension. Strictly contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73m²) or those on dialysis. Monitor for symptoms of euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), such as unexplained nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain.
